Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture
Pocantico Hills, New York

Jonathan Rose Companies was the advisor and owner’s representative from the early planning through the design and construction phases for this non-profit farm, educational center and restaurant near Tarrytown in Westchester County, New York.  Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture was developed by David Rockefeller and dedicated to the memory of his wife, Peggy Rockefeller, whose commitment to American farming and local agriculture inspired the project’s architecture and program.

The Stone Barns Center’s mission is to demonstrate, teach and promote sustainable, community-based food production. Open to visitors of all ages but with an emphasis on K-12 education, the Center offers a unique experience: a chance to learn about farming firsthand on a real working farm within a 30-minute drive of New York City.

A four-season operation, the Center’s farm produces food year-round in a greenhouse, using very little heat aside from what the sun provides. Livestock, chickens, vegetables, gardens, a learning facility and cultural center demonstrate to the public the advantages of local, community-based farming and environmentally sensitive agricultural practices. The Center is also home to Blue Hill at Stone Barns, a four star restaurant that offers guests a taste of the farm and the bounty of the Hudson Valley.

Jonathan Rose Companies served as owner’s representative during the design and construction phases, guiding all decision making and managing the project accounts.  With our expertise in green building practices, the firm helped make the Stone Barns Center more energy and resource efficient while also protecting its natural surroundings.
